Data over Pulse Width Modulation?

Steve has investigated the possibility of “data” being transmitted along a pulse width modulation (PWM) signal wire when fault conditions occur. In this specific case, he is looking at the PWM signal controlling the speed of a BMW F31 cooling fan.
