Why do you need a PicoScope?

Could you use a scan tool instead of a labscope? No, you need both.

A scan tool only points you in the right direction, perhaps indicating a misfire on a specific cylinder, but rarely does it pinpoint a fault. For example, is the misfire caused by an ignition, injector, or a compression-related issue?

Reliance on a scan tool alone can lead you to "parts darts" where you might find yourself replacing more and more parts until the fault goes away.

Instead, a PicoScope helps you:

Eliminate guesswork and test individual components before replacing them.
Find troublesome intermittent faults.
Investigate vehicle problems when there are no, multiple, or misleading fault codes.
Diagnose charging and starting faults.

2, 4 or 8 channel PicoScope?

The two and four-channel PicoScope 4225A and 4425A are our recommended products for general workshop use. The floating ground design, ConnectDetect™ and 200V inputs make for a very robust and easy-to-use product.

For experienced oscilloscope users involved in training, vehicle design and complex diagnostics the eight-channel PicoScope 4823 may be a suitable choice. Rather than floating grounds, which require a ground connection per channel, the 4823 has common grounds that are protected by self-resetting fuses. This means that you do not need one ground per channel, which can be a real time-saver when connecting up lots of channels. The common ground design limits the maximum input range of the 4823 to 50 V (protected to 100 V), so attenuators will be required when measuring voltage signals from inductive components such as injectors and primary ignition.

The Master kit is designed to give our customers a comprehensive kit including the award-winning WPS500X pressure transducer and a wide range of accessories. This kit can also be supplemented for Electric Vehicles and Noise, Vibration and Harshness with the addition of specific accessory kits. The kit is available in foam ideal for instant access in your existing tool trolley, or two carry cases with foam cutouts.

Our Automotive Master Kit has been designed to give our customers a way of buying everything they could need in one hit. While there is always more you can buy to add to your toolbox, in this instance we’ve put together our most comprehensive kit to-date. Our Master Kit consists of an upgraded and extended Advanced Kit, in a new larger tougher carry case and our WPS500X Maxi Kit in a separate case.

The kit includes PA210 Heavy Duty Case instead of Standard Case, and adds insulation piercing clips TA007, shrouded sprung hooks TA089/TA090, CAN Test Box TA069, PQ038 WPS500X Maxi Kit with adaptors & hoses, additional breakout leads (TA191, TA194, TA267), extra TA473 60A clamp, 2 additional TA499 x10 Scope probes and keyless entry lead TA330 to the accessories in our Advanced Kit.

The new heavy duty Master kit carry case (PA210) also includes foam cut-out locations for your PicoDiagnostics NVH kit (sold separately).

Built around the Off-Highway 4425A PicoScope, which features a more ruggedised boot, the Off-Highway Entry kit was created for technicians working with off-highway equipment and heavy-duty vehicles.

The kit's clips, probes and break-out leads help technicians quickly and easily connect to the components and systems they are most likely to see on the vehicles and equipment in their care. The kit also contains current clamps, ideal for checking power supply systems and delivery to electrically driven components.

Also included is a WPS500X pressure transducer and accessories, ideal for measuring engine air intake, exhaust and fuel system pressures. The Off-Highway Expert kit comes in a carry case for ease of storage and transport.

8-Channel Professional Kit

The 4823 allows you to simultaneously monitor more channels for those applications with more complex signal interactions but has a common ground reference rather than floating inputs and does not feature PicoBNC+ connections. This kit adds a range of BNC accessories to the 4823 providing a level of capability similar to the Advanced kit but with additional leads, adaptors and a third current clamp so you can make full use of all 8 channels. The kit is supplied in a carry case with foam cutouts.

For experienced oscilloscope users, the 4823 may be a suitable choice for training, vehicle design or complex diagnostics. This oscilloscope (like our earlier generation 4423 and 3423) has a common ground reference rather than floating inputs but does have additional protection against inadvertent connection of ground to power. The input voltage range is only 50V so attenuators are required when measuring signals from inductive components such as injectors The 4823 allows you to simultaneously monitor more channels for those applications with more complex signal interactions and also includes the same low-voltage signal generator as the PicoScope 4824.
