Over many years of experience, I have had issues with voltage drop on earth connections on both old and new vehicles. In fact, there have been manufactures that have had to upgrade earth wires on body, engine, and components.
I strongly suggest that users ensure that they only use the battery negative as the only earth point unless they have another proven earth point. Unfortunately some people overlook voltage drop as an issue.
