Can someone tell me what the value in brackets means?

I don't know how the number in brackets is calculated or what it means. The number in brackets appears when Interpolation is turned on in Preferences. ON=smoothing of line connecting sample points. OFF=no smoothing/ straight lines connect sample points.

Thanks very much! I found it in the Users Gide following your explanation.
"A number in brackets is the number of interpolated samples, if interpolation is enabled".
"A number in brackets is the number of interpolated samples, if interpolation is enabled".
