2005 VW Transporter T5 non start

Post by s4c »

Hi

2005 VW Transporter T5, engine code ABX 1.9TD PD

This vehicle cut out on the owner while driving and has not re started.

Fault code 19464 [P3008] camshaft position sensor [G40] signal out of range.

Code cleared and did not return on cranking until I used some easy start to check the mechanical response of the engine.

I have also checked lift pump pressure[10psi] and flow ]1 litre p/m]

I have also scoped the cam vs crank [attached]

Before I start pulling down the timing covers and checking the cam timing, has anyone got a known good trace for this engine?

Regards

Simon

Simon,

I can't find a known good.

MVB 004 field 4 torsion value or syncro angle, whats the value ?? (MBV from memory??)

Did it sound ok on easy start ?
Start with CMP sensor disconnected ? (extended crank)

Have you measured the tandem pump pressure or just the in tank pump LP ?

Hi

I haven't checked the tandem pump pressure yet due the the cam code coming up.

It stuggles to run on easy start.

What cranking pressure should I expect at tandem pump?

Also, can you remember the value on MBV004?

Regards

Simon

Alarm bells would be ringing for me.

They Idle at around 4Bar so i would expect it to reach somewhere near that sharpish.
Also, can you remember the value on MBV004?
What scan tool are you using, is there a label file if VCDS ? but -3 - +3 / -5 - +5 region

Hi.

Yes the alarm bells are ringing! Which is why I am looking at mechanical issues first.

I am using VCDS with latest software, sorry, didn't do a global scan and save it so I can't tell you what label file it has.

I will have another look on Monday and check the tandem pump pressure and the live data.

Thanks for your direction .

Simon

Hi there

I think you have a timing problem here. I can't say it for sure - because i haven't got a known good capture of the relationship between the cam and crankshaft on that engine.

My knowledge are based on the document SSP 209 from Volkswagen where there are a image of the cam/crankshaft relationship.

The timing seems to be way off the limit. ?

Hi

Firstly, thanks to everyone for their input.

I will explain where we are now and some of my queries.

On Monday morning, fresh from the weekend I checked MBV004 on VCDS but unfortunatly the lable file was missing, this has been logged and sent to VCDS.

I scoped relative compression vs fuel injector No.1. There was no injection until I disconnected the cam sensor.

Starting to look like cam timing!

Just to check, I thought I would look at the tandam pump cranking pressure, at first I thought that this could be the issue as I expected a higher cranking pressure. Elsawin states that running at 4000rpm the pressure should be 7.5bar. But I suspect [please correct me!] that like the Isuzu 4JX1 engine, only a low pressure fuel supply is required to start it due to the fuel compression process in the injector.

However, with the cam code, the lack of injection when the cam sensor is connected and its reluctence to go on easy start, we decided to pull the covers and check the cam timing. I wasnt involved in this process as I had other work to do, but it was found that the cam timing is out by 2 teeth.

We were later told by the customer, that the cam belt had been replaced about 2 months ago,in his words 'cheaply'.

Unfortunatly, the vehicle has been sent back to the other garage for them to put right the cam timing issue so I wont get a chance to get some known good traces.

Just an after thought, I noticed that looking at the cam vs crank trace that there is a TDC cut out as well as a BDC cut out. Am i right or have I been sniffing too many fumes?

Again, many thanks to all that helped.
