Ford Escort Ztec Emissions

Post by Liteace »

This is not really a major wow but I thought I put my little bit in. Picked up a 92 Ford escort to take up for its MOT, didnt drive to bad apart from it was gutless, all was good for the MOT apart from the Emissions, 1.65 at idle and 6.25 at 2000rpm, got the car back to the workshop, 1st thing I reached for was my Pico, connected up:

Channel A to Lambda
Channel B to Maf
Channel C to Tps

had spare channel D. started the engine, 1st with the spare channel D checked the heater supply voltage of the lambda that was fine then checked the supply voltage of the Maf, that also was fine. Engine hot at idle speed I had:

1 volt on channel A Lambda,
1 volt on B Maf,
1 volt on C Tps

channel D was sitting there doing nothing, I thought this has to be used, backed probed coolent temp sensor had 0.8 volts, checked temp of temp sensor is was 86-89 checked data, data telling me 0.8 volts was correct. I gave the throttle a wide open blip, it responded but not to well as it was bogged down, Maf voltage responded, Tps voltage responded, Lambda voltage dropped a little on overun, I assume due to fuel cut off then went back to 1 volt, I removed fuel pressure reg vac, lambda voltage dropped about 0.6 of a volt to 9.4 ish, removed crankcase breather from inlet manifold, BINGO see a massive changed in Lambda voltage as I was blocking off then releasing the crankcase breather inlet with me finger. I unclipped Maf from air box (good old Fords) so it was sucking in fresh air and not crankcase fumes and see even more response from Lambda
I pulled out the air filter and it looked like this:

Then pulled out a spark plug and that looked like this:

I changed the oil, oil filter, plugs and air filter, gave it a little run, it wasnt 100% but it was 100% better than before, left it on fast idle for 10 mins, check emissions, still a little high, then checked lambda voltage again and was getting a nice waveform, left it another 20 mins on fast idle to get the cat nice and hot, took it back for re-test, CO was 0.01, the guy said
"wow, thats low for an older car"
off I went with a years MOT thinking how long would this have taken me without the power of the Pico :D

I know, some of them make you laugh, they just drive & drive & drive, then are shocked when something goes wrong, they always say "its been ok the 3 years, why has it gone wrong now"

Or even worse, the owner HAS been having it serviced, and guess what!. . . , which I've seen too many times to mention!
