4423 or 4424 What's the difference?

Post by Tech_6 »

Anyone have an idea what is the difference between the 4423 and 4424 USB scope?

Dear Sir/Madam

Welcome to our Forum and thank you for your Post.

In regards to your question there technically is no difference between the 4423 and the 4424 Scope as a unit. They are both more than capable of being used with Electronics of any description with the correct accessories.

The key differences are however that the 4424 series scope will not run in Automotive PicoScope, Motorcycle and Pico Diagnostics. In order to run this software you would require one of the following scopes: -

• 4423 – 4 Channel Automotive Scope 4000 Series
• 4223 – 2 Channel Automotive Scope 4000 Series

The Automotive Scope will also run in Standard PicoScope 6 so you could use it as a normal lab scope should you wish too.

Alongside this an important change to this type of Scope is that the warranty on all automotive scopes is 2 years as opposed to 5 years. This is due to the scope being used obviously in more dangerous, less protected and harsher environments.

You would defiantly benefit from using the Automotive Software as it makes the 4423 an ‘Extremely Powerful Diagnostic Device’ as the software is configured with a comprehensive list of ‘Automotive Tests’ and ‘Help Files’ to make even the most difficult test to configure ‘easy and simple’.

It’s just as important to note should you wish to use other software like the ACE Misfire Diagnostic Software then again only the, 4xx3 scopes will operate and not the 4xx4 Series Scopes.

The 4424/4224 would be useless to you as an Automotive Diagnostic Tool.

I have included the following links to allow you to look into our Automotive Section and equipment.

Ok.....

So if I understand correctly, the 4423 has the same capability as the 4424? Does that mean I can run it as non-automotive? Or does really make any difference?

The reason I ask, is cuz I do the majority of the diagnostics in our shop now with a Snap-On Modis and with my personaly owned AutoEnginuity. But I also do custom machining, electronic designing and building at home as a hobby.
The CRT labscope I have now is ok but just doesn't do for me what I need anymore. Am after an informed direction to obtain abilities in both areas of interest.

Hi

Yes you can run the 4423 as a Lab Scope in the Standard PicoScope software as well as an Automotive Scope in conjunction with the Automotive Software.

For your applications of use, you could run the Automotive software at work and should you need to, you could run the Standard software at Home. The Key only difference in the Software is that the Automotive software has a built in library for Automotive Testing and the standard software does not. Therefore you could even use the Automotive Software for the projects you do at home and just ignore the 'Automotive Tab'.

Kind Regards

In continuation of this question can the PicoLog software be used on the the 4423 as if it were a 4424? When looking at Picolog software I did not see a version for the 4423 but for the 4424 yes? Thanks, Marcello

Hello and thank you for the posts (much appreciated)

PicoLog will most certainly function with our Automotive Scopes and could be useful for a number of tests such as temperature monitoring and parasitic drain measurements

PicoLog Version 6.1.13 can be downloaded here and it would be great to see your feedback and application of PicoLog when you can

I hope this helps, take care......Steve

Will do. I've got two projects. One monitoring Temperature at upper, and lower radiator hose to hopefully see the efficiency of the radiator/fan assembly. The other is to find the answer to parasitic drains that only appear when I'm not looking. I was going to use the reading of voltage drop across a fuse. I have read quite a bit on these forums regarding this idea. It always comes down to instability of the circuit used to read this voltage. The amp clamp, as well as the fuse (resistor) method. I'm just hoping that this error in reading might not totally ruin the data gathered. We'll see.

Thank you for the feedback, it would be great to see the results of your projects with PicoLog as I believe it has real value for such "monitoring" style tests (Temperature and Parasitic Drain)

Regrading parasitic drain via the volt drop method and as you mentioned, "the instability of the circuit used" I think the following link will help

Take care......Steve

I am resurrecting this very old thread because it's still relevant to me, today.

I have not yet purchased a Picoscope of any kind.

I do a 50/50 mix of automotive diagnosis and ordinary lab work such as diagnosing refrigerator motors and circuit boards. Ideally I would like to buy ONE Picoscope that will allow me to do both Automotive diag (via PicoAuto version of the software) AND ordinary laboratory-style diagnosis via the normal Picoscope software.

Which model(s) of Picoscope hardware will run BOTH the plain and the "Auto" versions of Picoscope 7?
