[Help] Motorcycle ignition waveform

Post by hongleo »

Hi there,

I have been test the secondary ignition for my motorcycle. :D
The waveform doesnt look like the example waveform.

Do we have some guide on motorcycle ignition waveform? Much appericated!

We don't use amp clamps to test secondary ignition waveforms.
Where have you seen that?

Hi there,

I didnt use current clamp to measure ignition waveform.
I used MI074 and PP357 probe.

Hi there

I might be able to help you with some waveform of the secondary ignition system - not coil onplug system.

This waveform is taken from a single-cylinder 250 cc Trial Bike (Honda Montesa 4RT) from the year 2007 and
which I myself have ridden Trial on.

This motorcycle from Honda was the first Trial equipped with a petrol injection system and which works without
a battery, but instead has a capacitor of 10 micro farad to start the motorcycle with.

The ignition system on this motorcycle is a normal CDI system with an ignition coil (conventional waste-spark system).
So this waveform is taken with secondary ignition pickup (MI074) and WPS500 transducer mounted in the cylinder head.
So I simultaneously measure the compression pressure and secondary ignition system at a cranking speed from the kickstarter movement.

To clarify this question - this ignition system works perfectly. However, it may annoy me that I did not take a waveform of the primary ignition system with a current clamp at the time.

I hope it can help you further in your search for a secondary ignition waveform.

Regards
Kim

What does it says under channel notes?

Hi liviu2004

That's a typo on my part - it's of course 10000 microFarad.

The charging system itself consists of a generator, a rectifier
and a capacitor, able to accumulate energy for a short time
and keep voltage as constant as possible.

Without this capacitor you will not be able to start this motorcycle as
there is not enough power available to boost the ignition system and the injection system.

Kim
