Hysterisis hysterics

Hi there,
Can someone please explain to my what "hysterisis" is, how it works, and what the +/- % is actually doing to the hysterisis in the Trigger options.
I have a vague understanding but I don't get how to apply it.
Appreciate some simple explanation and help
