PicoDiag w/o Pico Amp Clamp

Post by MachOne »

Will this software work with a different brand amp clamp? I currently have a Mac Hi amp clamp, and a snap on low amp clamp. I see no settings to change the scaling in this program. Is it possible ?

Thanks

Hello and thank you for the post

Unfortunately the Pico Diagnostic (PD) battery test (requiring a current clamp) is expecting a probe settings of 1 mv/A

This would be our TA167 https://www.picoauto.com/products//curr ... rent-probe or the TA388 option https://www.picoauto.com/products//curr ... rent-clamp for BNC+ scopes

If one of your current clamps can display at least 1 kA @ 1 mV/A then you can use this with our PD battery test. There is however no provision to change this probe setting within PD

You could however use PicoScope and create a custom probe, this would then require interpretation of the results in order to assess the battery performance

The following links will help https://www.picotech.com/download/artic ... probes.pdf

Take care.....Steve

Will the pass/fail results be good? I have a 600A current probe that is 1mv/a.

Hello and thank you for the post

The PD battery test is designed to accept the 600 A clamp

Where I have concerns is the resistance calculation derived from peak in rush current at the point of cranking.

The following link describes how we calculate battery resistance (See image within post below)
viewtopic.php?p=77701#p77701

Given peak in rush current during cranking can often exceed 1 kA, then the accuracy of your 600 A clamp beyond 600 A is an unknown and this may affect the resistance calcualtion

If you carry out a battery test and the peak in rush current does not exceed 600 A then your results are accurate

If the peak cranking current exceeds 600 A then the results could be compromised

I hope this helps, take care......Steve
