COMPRESSION

Post by jockwhalen »

Hi,
Anyone had any problems retrieving results while using pico diagnostic to perform a compression test on 6cylinder diesel engine. Tried on both sisu 620 engine and Perkins 1006-60t engine both a 24v starting circuit. Test runs fine by removing terminal on stop solenoid and seems to run test but never gives results due to UNKNOWN ERROR!!

Hello Jockwhalen,

Thank you for your post and it's great to see the HD guys getting involved with Pico.

With regards to the relative compression test in PicoDiagnostics there is an existing bug which has been identified. The reason you are getting an error is because the voltage input for the software exceeds the limit set. Currently it is limited to 20V which isn't particular useful for us looking at 24V systems but rest assured we are working behind the scenes to get this working.

In the meantime there are a couple of options available for you. The first would mean looking at the relative compression in the PicoScope 6 Automotive software. This will also give the option of including a cylinder identification 'sync' such as an injector event from cylinder 1, providing the ECM will still fire the injector. From here you will be able to determine cylinders based on firing order. However, this does require some additional time to set the scope up.

If you want to keep it a quick and easy test and not worried about cylinder identification, then you could stick with PicoDiagnostics but just connect the scope across one 12V battery. The voltage input is then reduced but you should still be able to see the relative compression waveform generated by cranking. This isn't ideal I know but it should be a good workaround solution till the software is updated.

We always welcome feedback and want to make sure we keep pushing forward with new features so please do let us know.

I hope this helps and if you need any assistance do get in touch.

Kind regards

Ben
