Using presets on more than one channel at a time.

Post by jarrod2700 »

Is it possible to use the automotive presets on more than one channel at a time? Just for instance if I used a compression preset test on channel one and wanted to use a primary ignition preset on channel two is there a special way to achieve this or is it not possible?

Hi
The presets are just a 'Wizard' quick way to assign the values for a test to the scope, making it easy for beginners to both get the channel settings and time base roughly correct and show the help file. They don't do anything special to the scope per se ... The settings can be looked up and replicated on other channels, or indeed noted down and then carried over to a new template, or another wizard generated example.

So, no you can't use or apply multiple or sequential wizards for a cumulative effect. It's easiest to use the more complex template as your base and then add the less complicated bits by hand. Probably best to get familiar with each wizard separately and confident with them before combining them, but that's just so you understand what to expect and avoid confusion when both are showing together. The are rarely mutually exclusive conflicts for combining but compromises are sometimes :D

Key to any multi channel configuration is time base, as it's going to be common to all channels used, so this can lead to compromising to the highest common denominator and then using zoom to see the detail, otherwise it's not complicated at all, just making sure that you have all the channel settings correctly cribbed!

The majority of channel settings are in the channel drop down, the letter of each channel in the lower part of the menu, the scale and AC/DC are directly selectable to the right. The channel settings defines the probe being used, any filtering etc. Remember to check if a maths channel is in use, and copy or reselect that in the new combo you create.

So, while you can't double up the wizard, you can manually achieve the goal, often in less than 60 seconds, the more familiar you are the easier it gets.

If you are having a specific issue best state the two tests you are combining and post your capture psdata file too, and what bit you're struggling with ... a bit of info about the car and what you're looking for ( symptom or errors) is likely to get feedback on the data too, which might be even more useful to sorting the car ...

Hope that makes sense
Richard
