Re: Starter solenoid noise, VW Golf Mk.6

A quick follow-up to this; I did a number of A-B-C-B-A tests with three starter relays (original VW, secondhand Siemens 40A, new Tyco 40A) which had a curious pattern of this spiking that occurs at solenoid pull-in. To be frank, it did not matter which relay was fitted, they all do this to some exte...

Re: Starter solenoid noise, VW Golf Mk.6

Alex, Many thanks for your responses, which are much appreciated. I hope to collate some new information, using some of the tests that you mentioned, as well as the measures directly off the back of the relay at the passenger compartment. Your comment regarding the pull-in current path of the soleno...

Re: Starter solenoid noise, VW Golf Mk.6

Many thanks for the replies, sorry it has taken me a couple of days to get back. In respect of the terminal 50 measures, on the Ch.C on the latter trace, this was taken by probe at the terminal 50 wire adjacent to the starter motor itself, not at the control pin on the relay. As it happens, I'm in t...

Re: Starter solenoid noise, VW Golf Mk.6

A slight update on the tests (the car has been left with me for a longer-term trial, so I'm fitting it inbetween other work); I re-measured the starter current with the clamp on the same cable, but at the battery end i.e. away from the starter. Exactly the same electrical disturbance as the solenoid...

Re: Starter solenoid noise, VW Golf Mk.6

[quote="Robski" Whats the engine like to turn by hand cold ? [/quote] It appears that the engine is not unusually stiff to turn from the auxilairy drive end of the engine. So where the 580A is coming from is a mystery - looks like a very inefficient starter motor. I'm going to see if I can set the t...

Re: Starter solenoid noise, VW Golf Mk.6

Here you are an analog very interesting case of study http://www.picoauto.com/tutorials/ferrari360-diagnostics.html Many thanks for this. I believe that this is the direction I am going in, so a useful case study like this one is great. In particular, I suspect starter solenoid "chatter" to have be...

Re: Starter solenoid noise, VW Golf Mk.6

As shown on the attached trace, which has starter current draw measured on a clamp at the starter battery +ve feed wire near the solenoid, not only Hi Vahalla, how close do you have the current clamp to the starter motor, is it possible the high current loads/magnetic fields are interfering with th...

Re: Starter solenoid noise, VW Golf Mk.6

Volkswagen_Golf_2009_Petrol_20150301-cold_crank_retest.psdata Sorry about the problem with the original posted file. Strange thing is, until I updated Pico Automotive s/w to latest version, I had no issues inthis respect, but have found now that anything that has a zoomed component (and the options...

Starter solenoid noise, VW Golf Mk.6

I am investigating an occasional non-start issue on a VW Golf Mk.6, the engine code is CGGA which is the gasoline 1.4 petrol, no turbo, with 59kW nominal rating. The battery is coming in for some suspicion, but this diagnostic has been a difficult one to call, as the engine turns over fine, and (for...

Re: MAF testing

I think that the point of note here is the airflow at "idle + EGR off" measurement is only worth taking with the scantool reading over OBD or the manufacturer's diagnostics; the Pico in this case is almost worthless as a measure! Why? Because trying to extract any meaningful data from a PWM or volta...
