Re: Accurate and Stable low amps measurement

20 amps is fine for this sort of work, although if as we do, using the door locking cycle as a trigger to ensure all readings are based on the same time line, then beware as some of these can exceed 20amp during the locking phase! Most drains rarely exceed 1-2amps, only twice has it been more (both ...

Re: Accurate and Stable low amps measurement

Sorry the data is saved using the latest beta, should not affect opening it normally, but sometimes it can ... you can install the beta as well as the release software and run them side by side, they do not conflict with each other, so you can always download the beta if you want to take a close loo...

Re: Printing logo issues on battery test

We're using Diagnostics Version: 1.5.11 build 35 from beta Version: 6.7.10.5, still no waveform or extended test data printing, but hopeful that Tim is working on these (and logo printing/resizing issues). Also a few issues on balance test with the relativity numbers having huge amount of decimal pl...

Re: Xenon HID headlight diagnosis

Thanks yes, the 35W seems to be borne out by the current being used, I too expected the current to reduce after getting up to temp, or maybe a big peak at start up ... I guess we'll take a look at a 5 minute trace and see if things change with an amp clamp and maybe try the Ignition lead clamp at th...

Re: Accurate and Stable low amps measurement

I've enclosed a sample file using the amp clamp method, if doing longer readings we would use a 30minute screen (200sec/div) and sample of 1k/sec and let it fill as many screens as it runs for. Then we have the detail to zoom in on when needed. Our basic 8minute screen uses a trigger so that locking...

Re: Accurate and Stable low amps measurement

I guess the resistor thing is what VW did, calculating the resistance of the fuses (i guess there must be some manufacturing tolerances and variance?) from the tables using a 7.5amp mini fuse (for easy of maths): A 1mv drop across the fuse is quoted as equivalent to 100ma drain, so that must mean th...

Re: Xenon HID headlight diagnosis

thanks, appreciate the help and feedback, sadly not had time to play with a working unit, but I will after looking at your readings. Do you think the Fluke 80K-40 with a 40kv but "low energy" (what ever that means?!) is suitable to use post ballast? I guess my fear testing a faulty unit is, will the...

Re: Xenon HID headlight diagnosis

any samples would be very handy, thanks. On the basis of Ohms law could you calculate the volts of the Output from the Ballast in a WORKING circuit using 2 amp clamps, one on the known 12.x volt section to the ballast and one on the section from the ballast to the bulb? Is the resistance going to va...

Re: Accurate and Stable low amps measurement

Andy Sadly even at 600ma range it's too low, but reading the spec sheet I think (or Fear!) the working range may be -80 to + 80 ma, and a max overload of 600ma ?? but either way we would need the ability to cope with say 2-3amps, probably safer to be more than that, as some items that cause a drain ...

Re: Accurate and Stable low amps measurement

Oddly enough I have 2 DMM's that look identical to the ES 595 Automotive meter, they are from Sealey in the UK called teh TA203, the reason for them is they have a 20amp rating for measuring current, rather that the usual 10 or 15amps, which is the difference on door locking sequences to blowing the...
