Sync install's

Postby rossk » Wed Feb 14, 2018 11:26 am

Hi

Just wondering if anyone can offer hints or tips relating to my current setup.

We run multiple PC's and Laptops - All of these also have multiple partitions so in affect we have multiple Pico SW installs - keeping these all updated is a bit of a pain but not a big deal and not my initial issue.

What I am struggling with is how if at all possible to sync my custom maths channels, customer labels, custom keyboard maps etc between all copies?

Any nice way of doing this? We currently save all captures to the cloud so they are accessible to all, but wonder if there is a way to do similar with the above.

Any input appreciated!

Hello Ross and thank you for the post.
I will attempt to answer based on the information I have acquired from the software team
(Please forgive my naivety here)
Theoretically it is possible to synchronise all your machines (with regards to Pico contents) but not without challenge!

Whenever you create a math channel, key board setting or custom probe etc. the structure of these files are saved in the App Data folder.
C:\Users\Your Name\AppData\Local\Pico Technology\

Unfortunately where you have multiple PC’s you will have multiple AppData folders (stored on each PC)
Then, in your case, you have your PC partitioned and so this will add additional AppData folders (on the same PC)

Here then we need some form of synchronisation process to ensure any changes on one PC is reflected on others.
Windows 10 does have a “Scheduling Task” feature allowing you to configure how and when synchronisations are carried out.
https://windowsreport.com/schedule-tasks-windows-10/

You then need to construct a Batch file to copy your selected files (automate the process)
https://www.wikihow.com/Write-a-Batch-File

The following link will help with, “copying or moving files from one location to another, if the files already exist in the destination folder, you receive an "overwrite" warning that prompts for confirmation before overwriting the file.”
https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/hel ... in-windows

As I envisage it Ross, your PC’s will need to be networked and perhaps one PC will be the Primary or Master device responsible for this synchronisation process and scheduling?

It might be worth considering “Delete Warnings" as if one PC deletes the entire contents of the AppData folder we need to prevent this occurring across all PC’s

I hope this helps and more importantly I hope it gets you on your way as I can see how this must be a real nuisance.

Take care……Steve
