Lexus GS 300 3GR-FSE Automatic

Post by Martinjensen »

Got this Lexus that im trying to diagnose using my new 4 channel Pico NVH kit.

Background history:
My customer bought the car 6 month back.
During the initial test drive he noticed a slight driveline vibration, the salesman told him it was from tires.
The car got 4 new tires, matched with rims, balanced and road force testet.
Car still have a driveline vibration.
The dealer he bought the car from (Toyota dealer) sendt the propshaft out for balancing.
No Change in the vibration.
The problem grew vorse, and the dealer replaced the pinion bearing.
The repair wasent succesfull, så they replaced the rear diff completley with a brand new OEM unit (Yes its is expensive) :-)
They returned the car to the customer, but he can still feel the vibration. The dealer told him that the car is ok, and they do not want to do anney further Work on the car.

So he asked me to take a look at the vehicle.

The veichle condition is like new.

So far i have done:
Visual inspection of suspension and steering - Ok
Inspection for exessive play in suspension and steering - Ok
Tire pressure - Ok
4 Wheel allignment - Ok
A road test with the NVH kit to verify the complaint. The vibration can be felt at 90km/t (55mph) and upvards.
All 4 wheels balanched to 0 grams
All 4 Wheels road force tested. 3 tires on 4kg and one tire on 11kg (left front)
Visual inspection of propshaft - Ok
Propshaft measured for runout: maximun runout measured = 3/10mm
Propshaft angles measured - Ok
Inspection of center bearing - Ok
U-joint inspection - Ok 0,05mm
NVH test with car on hoist
The vibration can be felt and measured the strongest on the rear diff.

I am open for ideas, and tests to carry out, trying to elliminate this problem

I have attached a file taken from the front inner seat bolt (Left hand drive) running highway speeds
On this recording, there are a T1 a T5 and a P1

And a file with the car running freeley on the hoist.(90kmt - 55mph) with one sensor (3 axis) mounted on the rear diff, and another sensor (y Axis) mounted on the center support bearing.
Please note that in the first half of the recording the 2 sensors is mounted in the same location, and in the 2.nd half of the recording the 2.nd sensor is mounted on the center support bearing.
Also note that the rear Wheels is suspended free in the air (the suspension is not compressed, so the rear drive Axels do not have their natual angles)
On this recording the P1 levels is above the scale, and there seems to be a second vibration just under P2

Hi Martin,

Steve Smith the resident NVH Guru is away delivering NVH training at the moment so may not see this immediately but I am sure he will comment as soon as he can.

I have to say that in my limited experience of NVH analysis I have seen a few rather odd results with the vehicle on a 2 post lift and everything hanging at all the wrong angles. For static test I think you are much better off with the vehicle supported under the suspension so that the drive shafts etc. are in a more natural orientation.

Good Luck.
Kev

Hi Kev, and thanks for answering.
I think you are right, and i will take the captures on the diff and center support again, but this time on the road.
Trying too keep the variables as low as possible. :-)
The recording labeled "Høj fart" (High speed in Danish) is taken on the road.

I don't have the NVH Kit, in fact I don't have a ramp. I'm reading this from a Learning point of view !

So happy to be ignored or taken as low priority. Wont be offended either way.

I agree Martin, all your testing should be conducted driving the car on the road replicating the unwanted noises /vibrations that your customer is complaining about.

As per Kev's comment, Steve is the man I would want holding my hand in this scenario.

Martin,

I have to admit that when I saw the file labeled "Høj fart" I did have a small schoolboy snigger bearing in mind what fart means in English......

Please post the capture of the on road run when completed and hopefully that will be a more representative analysis. Real world testing is always better if you can.
Kev.

Hi STC.
I only bought the NVH kit a month ago, so im in for a steep learning curve. :-)
I normaly Work on drivability and electric diagnosics. So this is a new field for me.
I own a 4 channel Pico and the WPS, and i must say that i follow your threads on this forum, and have learnt alot from them about math channels and alternative test measures. Hope i can give something back.

I will call the customer in for adittional tests, so if aney of you have tests, or ideas to try or measure, they are more than velcome.

Fortunatley the customer is willing to follow this thru, no matter what the cost.

Aney chance for NVH training near Denmark ???

The Lexus is in Again for further tests.

I have made 2 recordings with one sensor (3-axis) mounted on the rear diff, and another sensor (Y-axis) mounted on the propshaft center support bearing.

In these recordings the car is driven by the customer on the road, and he confirms that the vibration he is experiencing is present.

Edit: I cannot upload the files to the forum. Im getting this message: Sorry, the board attachment quota has been reached.

Edit 2: Files are now uploadet thanks to Martyn
