Inductive pickup from an old timing light safe for 4225?

Post by Trent »

The subject line says it all. Does anyone have a clue what voltage these old things deliver when connected to secondary ignition. I've got one laying around. If I understood correctly, Scanner Danner (YouTube guy) was using one for a trigger on a Picoscope. If I was betting, I would say far less than 200 volts.....

Wow, what a tool this Picoscope is! Tested a couple things on my CRV yesterday for the first time. Got my eye on a 600 amp clamp on.

Thanks, Trent

Measure it on the scope, use an attenuator just to be on the safe side.

These inductive pickup things, clamp around the high tension lead (spark plug wire in American speak) & harvest a signal from the electromagnetic interference, or Radio frequency interference (RFI) that is generated during the creation of the ignition event. In reality your inductive pick up is not too far removed from a simple antenna & as such, it is not exposed to any significant voltage.

Having said that, you need to make sure that your setup has some allowance for those stray 30,000 volts that often make a break for freedom.

Here is a relevant post from the distant past on Autonerdz.....

Going equipped with Known Good HT Lead(s) would minimise the risk perhaps ?

True, but things are only "known good" until they fail, which everything ultimately does. . :D
