1998 Vectra B (X18XE) with P0335 / P0130

Post by terbo »

Hi,

Friend of mine has a 1998 Opel Vectra B with Automatic Trans and a X18XE-Engine.
Sometimes it runs fine, and sometimes it doesn ´t want to start or only with
foot on the Gas, and then it stumbles and pops like backfiring trough the Intake.
In all bad running cases it sets a P0335, and now and the a P0130.

He was at the Dealer so often ,they know him by name ;) In advice form them :

He already changed the CAM-Sensor (3 times) , the CRK-Sensor (2 times), the Engine ECU (2 times),
he took apart the timing belt and allined it (2 times), he removed almost the complete
Engine wiring and measured the Pins from ECU > all reachable Sensors and Actors with a DVOM,
replaced the Battery now the second time since he has the Car.

And last week 3 days o.k, and before the Weekend, it kicked him again with the P0335
and didn´t want to start and run.

While testing he came across one thing that won´t get into my head, he told me that he had the
car idleing (bad) and then disconnected the CAM "and" the CRK , and the car just stumbled on
like before....HOW could that be ? I was thinking of , could it run off some RPM-Input from the
Automatic Trans ?? And could this be maybe the cause of his whole problems ?

I will go there when i get time, but before that i researched a lot and would like to ask if someone
has a CAM/CRK Picture for this Engine ? I read that the CAM Sensor is a very strange thing
that uses "Phase-Shift" signals - how do i get a good Waveform of this Sensor in comb with the CRK.

Information about it is hard to find. And before driving one hour to him and then get back with
bad or no useful Waveforms would be wasted time.

Any Information is welcome

Greets Chris

Hi Chris

I might help you with a translation of the P0335 trouble code. This the description of the P0335 from the TIS manual, which could explain some of the problem you are experiencing.

P0335 - Incorrect RPM Signal

The control unit did not recognise 58 teeth pulses between the
synchronisation marks on the crankshaft pulleyTime is implausible while a tooth gap is recognised.

With trouble code P0335 stored and engine speed greater than 8000 rpm,
trouble code P0340 (camshaft sensor fault) is additionally stored.

(Short circuit to ground or circuit interruption)
(Short circuit of signal lead to oscillator lead)
(Intermittent problems in the signal leads)

Above conditions must be fulfilled for at least 3.5 s .
Replacement Value:
Camshaft emergency operation
The crankshaft position, engine speed and spark timing are calculated from
the camshaft signal. The engine speed is limited to 4512 rpm.

Effect:
If trouble code P0335 is stored in addition to trouble code P0340 , injection
and ignition are locked.

Note:
"Emergency Mode" remains activated until the next ignition OFF.

Regards
Kim

Try wiggeling the connector at the ecu when the engine is running. If this generates the faultcode than the ecu is probably faulty.
Had a few of these with p0335 where the ecu was the problem.
Ofcourse check signal and connector pins before replacing ecu.

Hi,

Thanks, for the TIS Infos....greater than 8000 ? I think the Engine would not get
to that rpm even if it would rum without any Transmission and without any Accessories ;)

Will look at that for sure, but with the (3) third ECU installed by now
and always the same error - i don´t think it´s gonna be that simple.

Has anyone infos about the CAM Sensor or a CAM/CRK Waveform for this ECU ?

Hello Terbo.
Here a some links for AC Exicter Cam sensors.
http://www.picoauto.com/automotivetopics/cam_ac.html
http://www.londonroadgarage.com/safe/ecotech.html
If i remember correct there are a video on the disc supplied with the scope, where Frank Massey are covering that particular sensor.

Remember to tjeck terminal tension at the ECU and sensor, maybe somone ind the past, has damaged the terminals in their effort to diagnose the car.

Regards Martin.
