2003 Seat 1.8T came to us with cylinder 1 misfire. This engine has 4 wire COP so transistor is inside the coil.i only had time to check the current and i was quite suprised when i've seen 18A for current.check the other 3 ignition coil they had 17-18A as well.We replaced the coil what fixed the misfire but i left with a question.
Why does it have 18A current?i've never seen high current like this.Aftermarket coils have different current but these were originals.
In those engines there is great difficulty of ignition, the spark serves to generate a lot of energy, because complex fluid dynamics and high pressures in the combustion chamber, also in this engine the sparks are two, the first shorter than the second, all this for avoid misfire and that the spark plug gets wet from gasoline. As mentioned by my colleague, even in the most modern engines of the Group Vag it happens equal, but also in the BMW engines.
