2005 Mustang GT 4.6 V8

Post by PicoMike »

Hi All,

Today at work we decided to capture some 2-wire COP Waveforms from my 2005 Mustang. It has no faults, these were purley taken for Waveform pre-sets.

We noticed that at idle we were seeing 3 lots of signal, however on rev, we only saw one?

Anyone know why? Only idea was that while idling the ECU is ensuring there is no unburnt fuel...??

I did the test on several plugs....result the same each time...

As you say Mike it will be to lower hydrocarbons @ idle, the multi striking will cease around 1200 RPM-ish .

Capture again with a longer time base & increase RPM (1µs sample interval) & use the time cursors where the multi striking ceases to give an idea of RPM 8)

PS Animated GIF's would have looked sweet :)

Come on Mike you were very clearly in St Neots not in the Croydon borough! :) :D

Sorry could not resist that one :P

As Robski says multi strike has been used in the US of A for some time as an element of emissions strategy at idle(ish), i have heard of some systems that maintain multi strike > 3K rpm, quite prevalent in racing engines, also a number of the specialist ECU manufacturers offer the function.

I am guessing that the Pico breakout leads did not fit then!

Just to confirm the thoughts on this, we re-ran the test and it appears that around 1700 rpm the signal changed to a single fire...

Confirmed this by longer time base and gradual increase in revs...

At 699.3 ms through to 806.4 ms you can see the reduction from 3 events to one.

I placed the time cursors at the last multi-strike event & the first single strike event and this indicated 1200 RPM on the frequency/RPM info tab at the bottom right of the graticule 8)

indicated 1200 RPM on the frequency/RPM -- ----- ---- --- --- - ---- -----.
The missing words will be "indicated 1200 RPM on the frequency/RPM so thats 2400 RPM for a four stroke"

Sorry. Couldn't help it. 8) 8) :D

hmmm I'll have to look at that again, might have confused myself ..........

Forgot to multiply for 720°, or to put the 2nd vertical cursor at 360°, not a fuel pump is it :?

Hey Mike,

Where did you get the test leads that you are using between the ignition coil and the coil connector, or are those home-made? They look like a big time saver compared to peeling back insulation to get the amp probe around the wire.

Thanks,
Blake

Hi Blake,

I believe it was a PP327 breakout lead - http://www.picoauto.com/breakout-lead.html

Can't remember which size exactly it was we used....

Cheers,

Mike
