Have you scoped the tps sensors at ecu end also, just wondering if wiring is good.

Thanks Ant... Yes all signals checked at ecu multi plug...

The way forward may be to get my hands on a known good Astra and carry out some tests on the system.

Thanks again Paul88

Surely the butterfly should have an operational range, rather than 3 distinct steps?

Imagine the car at cruise, the revs could be moderately high requiring a fair volume of air, which would not pass in the idle position of TB, but to have the butterfly wide open will mean every cylinder is going to get a large fill of air, which will then make for a very lean mixture when the relatively short injector duration (due to low load at cruise) adds a small amount of fuel.

Unless there is also variable valve gear fitted? But as I understand it that would be the Z16XER, the P is timingchain designator (rather than belt) IIRC.

Avdr thanks for the reply and perhaps I should have said " three distinct steps and everything in between ".

Of course the opening of the throttle is gradual and I would expect everyone on this forum to know that, but thanks for pointing it out.

Today I looked at two different cars and the way they control the throttle plate on start up.

The first one is a Fiat Punto Grande 2007 and with " key off engine off " the throttle plate is in the idle position (part open).

With the " key on engine off " the throttle plate briefly go's (fully closed) and then returns to (part open).

When you crank the key the throttle plate remains at (part open) and starts at idle, until you press the accelerator and then it moves to fully open and everything in between.

The next car is a Peugeot 206 2008 and this one is more interesting and similar to the offending Astra.

With the " key off engine off " the throttle plate is at idle (part open). Same as the Astra and the Fiat.

With the " key on engine off " the throttle plate slams shut at (fully closed) and remains tightly shut.

When you go to crank the engine the throttle plate opens to the idle position and the car idles, until you press the accelerator and then it go's fully open and everything in between.

So the fault with the Astra is the throttle slams shut "key on engine off" but unlike the Peugeot will not open when the engine is then cranked.

Thanks again Paul88....

Liteace the post has switched from dj autos to Paul88 because Dave has gone on away for a few days. So I thought I would keep the ball rolling. Daves garage and my garage are close to each other in the same part of Manchester.
