Solid core plug wires & Secondary Ignition Pickup PP178

Post by benmixmaster »

Will there be any problem or different effects clamping around secondary stranded solid core spark plug wires (typical on many motorcycles or old cars) using Secondary Ignition Pickup (PP178). with picoscope 6 & 4423.

In the past I have read in the manual for other scopes (Kel-tech/NAPA balcamp) that you may have to use resistor type wires on each secondary scoped wire.

Hi Ben

After speaking to my colleague we dont see a reason into why this wont work. You may find the Secondary Pick up Leads (Clamp) are slightly bigger for the single core cables as modern Silicone HT Leads are slightly thicker.

This may affect the HT Reading but you should certainly be able to get a Secondary Trace.

Please let me know how you get on.

benmixmaster,

Hate to disagree with Lee here but....

You will not get good results with solid core ignition wires. We have seen this many times.

Thanks to both of the responders! It may be a while before I get back too this because it's generaly on 2cyle small engines (mopeds, motorcycles) that I run into this, So what I think I will do is make an adapter and add like a foot of resistor wire inline to spark plug to clamp around and see what type of results I get, A bit tricky, I dont want to cause cross fire raising KV demand or shorten fire line with too much resistance. benmixmaster
