Sight block kit

The Pico PQ071 Sight block kit contains the sight block (an updated version of the one used in our Volkswagen caddy case study), a stop valve for testing a negative pressure fuel pump under load, and 3 sets of hose barbs for connecting to different size fuel hoses.


The kit is intended for diagnosing problems with low-pressure fuel systems up to the inlet of any high-pressure pump. The maximum safe working pressure for the sight block is 7 bar (gauge pressure).

Pressure ranges

Three pressure ranges = performance and versatility

The three pressure ranges of the WPS500X allow accurate measurement and analysis of many automotive pressures including cylinder compression, fuel pressure, intake manifold vacuum and even pulses from the exhaust.

Range 1

The first range gives you high resolution and accuracy for high-pressure tests such as cranking and running cylinder compression or fuel pressure testing. Not only is this test a great way for you to find compression issues, but it is also an excellent way for you to identify cam timing issues such as jumped timing belts and stretched timing chains — this is especially useful on multi-cam engines that may not have a cam sensor on each camshaft.

Range 2

The second range measures from –15 to 50 psi (approximately –1 to 3.45 bar). This range is ideal for vacuum tests and fuel system tests. When testing these systems you will find the zoom function is especially useful as it makes it easy to analyze the valves operating with the vacuum waveform, or the injectors through the fuel waveform.

Range 3

With the third range you can measure –5 to 5 psi (approximately –0.34 to 0.34 bar). This setting is sensitive enough to allow you to analyze small pressures or pulses such as pulses from the exhaust.

Built-in zoom function for enhanced analysis

The zoom function operates by removing all of the voltage from the signal below 100 Hz and then multiplying the remaining signal up to 100 times. For example: Let’s say your transducer is connected to the intake manifold vacuum on a running engine at idle with the transducer set to mode 2 (–15 to 50 psi) and the waveform on your PicoScope is at –9 psi. The fluctuation in the signal caused by the valves opening and closing versus atmospheric pressure forcing air into the manifold will be visible, but will only make up a small portion of the overall signal. Selecting the zoom function will bring the waveform up to the zero line and the fluctuations will be magnified making an analysis of this component of the signal much clearer.

Case studies
Engine non-start
The engine is a non-start after a major engine overhaul. Compressions and valve timing have been checked and are correct.
Misfire
The topic of this case study is not so much "How we managed to diagnose the fault in question" but more about the multiple options at our disposal when it comes to diagnosing component failure.
Sudden power loss
I admit that the fix is probably quite obvious using the parts darts technique or best guess scenario, but I thought this particular job demonstrated the use of the WPS500 as an everyday aid to speed up the diagnostic process.

Due to the wide range of hydraulic fittings in use we do not supply any specific adaptors or hoses for use with this product. Those provided with the low pressure WPS500X are not suitable for use with the higher pressure hydraulic systems.

The FirstLook sensor looks at the pulse waves generated by the normal operation of an internal combustion engine. All engines produce a predictable pattern of these pulses and so any change or irregularity in the pulse wave can be traced back to problems in the engine. The pulse wave can also be affected by unburned fuel in the exhaust and this abnormality is also detected and displayed.

In typical use the FirstLook sensor is either placed in the exhaust pipe or attached to a vacuum port where it detects the air stream pulse waves. When connected to a suitable dual trace oscilloscope the display shows in real time the valve, cylinder and injector activity in any two or four stroke, gasoline or diesel internal combustion engine. By displaying timing triggers on the scope, observed malfunctions may be pinpointed to specific cylinders. The ability to identify the specific cylinders where valve or injector problems are occurring greatly reduces the time and expense required to diagnose engine problems.

SenX Technology introduces their FirstLook™ Automotive Engine Diagnostics Sensor. According to SenX, when used with a dual trace lab scope, the new tool performs like an engine analyzer, providing performance data on engine cylinders, valves and injectors without any engine disassembly.

When an engine turns over, it generates an exhaust pulse every time a valve opens. FirstLook is connected to the tailpipe to analyze these pulses and capture data relative to how the engine and, more specifically, each cylinder is performing. The company feels comparisons can then be made between the different engine compartments to help determine if and where a problem exists.

To see just how well FirstLook would perform in the shop, we gave a unit to Innovation Award Panelist and ASE-certified Master Technician Mike Steptoe, owner of Reliable Auto Repair in Fort Atkinson, WI. His thoughts follow.

The Review

“I really liked this unit, especially the sensitivity it offers in capturing information on each cylinder. By looking at the wave patterns on my scope, I could definitely see when each individual valve was opening and closing. I also really enjoyed how quick and easy it was to set up, especially in comparison to a traditional engine analyzer. In less than 5 minutes I was ready to go, as there's only one connection. This is in comparison to the multiple test lead connections an analyzer requires.”

“Additionally, I'd think this would be an excellent tool for selling injector cleaning services, as you can see when the injectors are opening and closing. I was also able to diagnose some of the more difficult vehicle makes we get here. For me that meant I didn't have to turn away a Mercedes, but was able to diagnose and repair an injector problem. I think the ability to connect to a PDA also makes the tool a more economical alternative for an individual technician.”

Please ensure that the adaptor you select is the same thread size and no longer than the tip of spark plug you are replacing.  While using a shorter adaptor than the spark plug you are replacing may produce results that are slightly low using one that is longer may damage your engine.

 

The High strength of the standard compression hose is designed to have the minimum possible damping effect on the observed waveform. Using an alternative more flexible hose will significantly degrade the measured waveform.

The Pico WPS500X Adaptor Kit B adaptor kit enables you to use your WPS500X as a replacement for a gauge in a wide range of aftermarket pressure testing kits (e.g. Sykes–Pickavant, Sealey, Laser and Draper kits). This kit enables you to reuse your existing adaptors and still gain the advantages of seeing pressure activity in real time with the WPS500X.

The kit comes with 2 separate adaptors. The Compression adaptor uses the Pico Standard compression hose to connect to your various third party dummy injector, glow plug or spark plug adaptors. The second adaptor is for using the WPS500X to replace the original dial gauge in aftermarket test kits for looking at items like coolant, oil, fuel pressures etc.

The Pico TA250 converts the male Foster 2 series connector on the input of the WPS500X to a male or, in conjunction with the Pico TA212 Standard compression Hose, a female Rectus series 21 coupler.

The Pico WPS500X Adaptor Kit A enables you to use your WPS500X as a replacement for the gauge in a wide range of AST (and other Foster 12FST) pressure testing kits. This kit enables you to re-use your existing adaptors and still gain the advantages of seeing pressure activity in real time with the WPS500X.

The kit consist of a compression hose to use with various AST adaptor kits, such as dummy injectors and glow plugs. It also consists of a second adaptor for using the WPS500X to replace the original dial gauge in various AST testing kits.
