EV Guided Tests

27/10/20

To support the PicoScope 4425A EV (Electric Vehicle) Diagnostics Kit, we have started introducing a new series of Guided tests in the PicoScope 7 Automotive software. Some of these tests take advantage of facilities not available in PicoScope 6 Automotive, and over the course of the coming months, we will extend the coverage of these tests. Why not download our latest version of PicoScope 7 Automotive and check out these new Guided Test files and videos?

Safety tests

  • 0 V potential*
    • The purpose of this test is to prove that a hybrid or electric vehicle High Voltage (HV) system, cable or electrical component is dead prior to carrying out any work on it. The test is applicable
to both Direct Current (DC) and Alternating Current (AC) HV systems, circuits and components.

  • Insulation resistance*
  • The purpose of this test is to verify the insulation resistance between High Voltage (HV) circuits and the vehicle chassis using an Insulation tester. The test is for diagnostic purposes or for preventative safety (if carried out after fitting HV related components such as cables, inverters, batteries, A/C pumps, water pumps, and gearboxes etc.).

Charger-vehicle tests

  • Charger-vehicle communications (type 1)
    • The purpose of this test is to check Control Pilot (CP) communications between an Electric Vehicle (EV) and Mode 2 Electric Vehicle Supply Equipment (EVSE) when they are connected with a Type 1 coupling (IEC 62196-2).

  • Charger-vehicle communications (type 2)*
  • The purpose of this test is to check Control Pilot (CP) communications between an Electric Vehicle (EV) and Mode 2 Electric Vehicle Supply Equipment (EVSE) when they are connected with a Type 2 coupling (IEC 62196-2).

  • Charger-vehicle proximity line resistance (type 1)
  • The purpose of this test is to check the operation and integrity of the Proximity Pilot (PP) line on an Electric Vehicle (EV) having a Type 1 coupling (IEC 62196-2) with the Electric Vehicle Supply Equipment (EVSE).

  • Charger-vehicle proximity line resistance (type 2)*
  • The purpose of this test is to check the operation and integrity of the Proximity Pilot (PP) line on an Electric Vehicle (EV) having a Type 2 coupling (IEC 62196-2) with the Electric Vehicle Supply Equipment (EVSE).

  • Charging current split*
  • The purpose of this test is to evaluate the charging split between the vehicle's Low Voltage (LV) auxiliary (12 V) and High Voltage (HV) battery systems when being charged by single-phase Mode 2 Electric Vehicle Supply Equipment (EVSE).

System/component tests

  • Auxiliary battery charging*
  • The purpose of this test is to evaluate the charging of the vehicle's Low Voltage (LV) auxiliary (12 V) battery system by its High Voltage (HV) system when it is not connected to Electric Vehicle Supply Equipment (EVSE).

  • Motor resolver*
  • The purpose of this test is to check the excitation and signal circuits to and from an EV motor resolver.

  • Regeneration current*
  • The purpose of this test is to check High Voltage (HV) battery charging by regeneration when the vehicle is decelerating. Only perform this test where safe access to the HV Direct Current (DC) cables is possible.

  • Toyota Prius (3rd generation) system main relay operation*
  • The purpose of this test is to check the operation of the System Main Relay (SMR) within a third-generation Toyota Prius hybrid vehicle.
