Coil on Plug (COP) and Signal Probe

Here at Pico, we always try to evolve alongside the vehicle system development and update our accessories accordingly. This is the case with the Coil on Plug (COP) and signal probe, which has been improved to be even easier to get into those tight spaces in the engine bay. The COP probe is the fastest way to check coil-on-plug ignition coils and spark plugs, to:

  • find misfires fast
  • display scope patterns of the secondary ignition, which is faster than scoping the primary ignition

It can also:

  • work on all automotive scopes capable of displaying ignition patterns
  • be used to investigate injectors and other inductive actuators
  • allow for easier access to hard-to-reach components

The coil–on–plug and signal probe works with most COP systems; it requires no special adaptors, no foil strips, and no batteries. It eliminates the need for back-probing: to use the probe simply press the probe against the coil.

As you can see from the image above, the COP probe has changed in design and shape from the older unit with the orange handle.

An ignition waveform gives a nice clear capture of each stage of the ignition signal:

  1. Negative polarity peak
  2. Plug firing voltage – plug kV
  3. Burn Time
  4. Coil oscillation period

Most manufacturers will not give any data on their ignition systems or spark plug operation, so being able to capture your own data is fantastic and PicoScope is the right tool for the job.

Since changing the design of the COP probe, it is possible to bend it into different areas of the engine, making you able to test multiple sensors, like injectors and certain actuators, for example EGR valves.
