PicoScope 7: Creating custom Math channels for inverting waveforms (MIC#5)

The built-in Invert option #

The Invert option is already a “Built-In” math channel that allows you to invert channel A or B should it be necessary for improved analysis.

This is fine if the channel you wish to invert is Channel A or B, but if you want to invert Channel C or D?

There are two options to do this, so let’s explore both.

We will start by making a custom Math channel by simply placing a minus (–) symbol in front of a channel

Placing the minus symbol (–) in front of any channel letter will invert the relevant channel

Building a custom math channel for both Channel C and D is easy in PS7, ensuring they are ready to go.

Creating a custom Invert Math channel #

Open the More… menu (under Channel D) and scroll down to Waveform evaluation and select Math channels:

Since PS7 already comes with Invert A and B built in, we can add Channel C and D easily. Start by selecting the Add button (+):

To create an Invert channel, all we need to do is insert a minus (–) sign in front of the channel:

Select Next on the lower right after making your new custom math channel –C (and –D):

Next, we will change the Name from –C (or –D) to “Invert C” or “Invert D”…

Next, change max range and Min range to 100 V and -100 V

Once the name and ranges have been set, click Finish in the lower right corner. This will then be added to your Math channel at the bottom of the list.

You can also edit your custom Math channels and select different line colors as well.

While the formula is straightforward, it can be applied within other formulas to reverse the value. Negative duty cycle is a typical example where the formula duty(B) would present the positive duty cycle of the signal on channel B, but duty(-B) reveals the more typical negative duty for our applications.

Quick invert option in PicoScope 7 #

Now, if you want to invert any channel quickly and not save it as a math channel, PicoScope 7 allows you to easily do this by opening the Channel option menu, clicking the channel button and selecting Invert from the Vertical scaling list

We hope this helps in creating new custom Inverted Math channels or simply inverting the channel quickly.
