Case Study: Mercedes GL550 – Turbochargers

By Scott Baylis, Von Housen Automotive Group

This vehicle came in with the engine malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) illuminated. Using our Xentry diagnostic scanner we found diagnostic trouble code (DTC) P029900 was stored in the engine control module (ECM). Our first step was to find out the criteria required to trigger this fault code.

We found that this DTC is set when boost pressure is not within a determined range. The next step was to look over freeze frame data.

VW Beetle - Positive Lead Diagnostics
Customer complaint that their 2008 VW Beetle (2.5 liter engine) does not charge. The alternator is new with no voltage drops! The battery light on the dash does not illuminate with KOEO or when its not charging, and if you rev the engine up to 2000-2500 rpms, the alternator starts to charge.

Hyundai Tucson - South Main Auto
A customer complaint of "it will not run the drive cycle and it is due for inspection!". There are lots of inputs to the ECM that will inhibit the monitors from running and we quickly learn on this one that the fuel trims are off the chart!
