Diesel engine performance Guided Test | PicoScope 7

We’re pleased to announce the addition of a new Diesel Engine Performance Guided Test to our PicoScope 7 Automotive software. This test helps technicians diagnose diesel engine performance issues using a combination of signals to provide a complete picture of engine health. It’s a powerful tool for anyone working on modern heavy-duty or off-highway diesel engines, especially when there are no fault codes to guide the diagnosis.

Modern diesel engines are complex systems where the synchronization of various components is crucial for optimal performance. These systems rely on precise sensor data—like crankshaft position, camshaft position, and fuel rail pressure—to control injection timing and ensure efficient combustion. When a performance issue arises, it can be due to a variety of factors, from a failing sensor to an injector problem, and pinpointing the exact cause can be a real challenge, particularly when no diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) are present.

This new Guided Test makes diagnosing these tricky issues much more straightforward. It provides a structured, multi-signal approach that removes the guesswork from your diagnostics. The test automatically sets up PicoScope to capture signals from the crankshaft position sensor, camshaft position sensor, and fuel rail pressure sensor simultaneously. You’ll get step-by-step instructions on where to connect and how to capture reliable data. The guide also explains how to interpret the waveforms, allowing you to see how each cylinder contributes to engine speed and identify performance discrepancies. By analyzing these signals together, you can quickly determine if a specific cylinder is underperforming, whether it’s due to a mechanical issue or a fuel delivery problem, saving you time and preventing unnecessary parts replacement.

Ben Martins, one of our Automotive Application Specialists, notes that “With the increasing complexity of diesel engine management and the critical need for efficiency in industries like agriculture and construction, this test is more relevant than ever. What I particularly like is how it empowers technicians to diagnose elusive performance problems that don’t trigger a fault code. By providing a clear, visual representation of engine health, it helps technicians get to the root of the problem faster, increasing first-time fix rates and improving overall workshop efficiency.”
