Case Study: Fiat Kobelco Excavator

After the release of our Engine and Hydraulics kit, it seemed apt that I was asked how the kit can be applied to a faulty machine. What we have here is a Fiat Kobelco E135 tracked Excavator, fitted with an Iveco 4-cylinder diesel engine. There is nothing too fancy about the engine: it is an old-type geared industrial engine with a rotary pump and mechanical injectors. In terms of engine electrical equipment, there really isn’t much going on!

As always (but particularly in this case) the customer interview was vitally important. According to the operator, the machine had always been a little temperamental, but it really started acting up four months ago. The engine would stop suddenly, while the machine was being operated!

Caption competition – Results

In our December newsletter, we asked our readers to send in their suggestions for a caption competition. This lovely image of Steve Smith in an engine bay was too good an opportunity to miss. We received a lot of great suggestions, and here are a few of our favorites:

~ Scania baby, slip a scope-lead into pin3....for me.....
~ Get me a scope! I’ve got to get this sleigh going quick!
~ The fool started the engine that's how I got dragged into this situation.

Our top caption came from Philip Williams, Technical Manager at Headset Services Ltd:

~ Santa’s sleigh will be OK to go – just give me a few pico-seconds to fix it.

liviu2004, a user on our automotive forum, put this rather interesting WPS500X investigation online, and we're glad it is there!

I was asked to have a look at this Opel Astra H, 2004 with Z18XE engine, petrol 1.8. The customer had the car for a week. Complaints being that the engine starts and stalls immediately or starts and only idles, even on full gas.

The car has been in a garage and with my friend who did some basic tests. The following have been done to the car prior to my arrival:

diagnostics, no fault codes found whatsoever;
mass air flow meter plug disconnected;
another genuine crankshaft position sensor;
fuel pump replaced;
spark coil and spark plugs replaced;
gas throttle replaced;
compression test done with the test hose exploded.
