PicoBNC+ Secondary Ignition Pickup — Capacitive Probe

Description

The TA397 PicoBNC+ secondary ignition pickup from Pico Technology is a capacitive probe designed for automotive technicians to measure secondary ignition voltage safely without direct connection. It clamps around spark plug wires or ignition components, capturing high-voltage waveforms on your PicoScope oscilloscope for fast, accurate ignition diagnostics.

The TA397 comes with a shielded 1.8 m (6 foot) lead. It is suitable for use with conventional ignition systems and most HEI and DIS systems. Our library of Automotive Waveforms contains example waveforms captured using a PicoScope automotive oscilloscope and the TA398 or the MI074 BNC version.

This lead is fitted with a PicoBNC+ interface, allowing it to be recognised by the software for auto-configuration. The lead requires a PicoScope featuring the PicoBNC+ such as the 4225A or 4425A.

Product Specification

PicoBNC+ Secondary Ignition Pickup — Capacitive Probe TA397
Measurement range -5 kV to 100 kV
Transformation Factor 10 000:1
Clip dimensions 7.5 mm internal diameter; 25 mm width
Total cable length 2.5 meters (inc. integrated capacitive divider)
Ground lead length 60 cm equipped with heavy-duty ground clip

Features

Smart PicoBNC+™ Integration

Unlike legacy BNC probes, the TA397 features Pico’s smart interface. The moment it is plugged into a compatible PicoScope (like the 4225A or 4425A), the PicoScope 7 software automatically recognizes it, self-configures the correct probe settings, and sets up the scaling. No manual setup required.

Heavy-Duty Shielding

Built with a premium 1.8-meter (6-foot) shielded signal lead to guard against high-frequency electromagnetic interference (EMI) and cross-talk from neighboring engine components.

Typical uses

Hands-Free Intermittent Misfire Testing

Unlike standard hand-held Coil-on-Plug (COP) probes that require a technician to hold the tool against a coil, the TA397 clips securely to an HT lead or extension wire. This allows for hands-free data logging during real-world road tests under true engine load conditions.

HT System Integrity Checks

Perfect for visualizing spark burn time, peak kilovolts (kV), and coil oscillations to pinpoint cracked plug wires, fouled spark plugs, or weak coil packs.

Versatile Configurations

Can be used on conventional distributor systems, wasted-spark/DIS configurations, and even modern COP or cartridge systems when combined with an HT extension lead.
