1.  New Case Study: Skoda Octavia Crankshaft Reluctor

This month we have a new addition to our Everyday Diagnostics series: a relatively simple repair, if you have a scope! This vehicle was recovered from another garage after having its engine rebuilt. It would start and then cut out.

2.  Technical Information and Tips

PicoScope can now test components with frequency outputs.

Some modern MAF sensors, for example, contain digital electronics so that the scaling and corrections can be made within the sensor, thus improving accuracy. The output of these sensors is a changing frequency, so we recently added the facility to record this frequency against time. The frequency measurement option is enabled from the AC/DC drop-down menu. This option is only available on the PicoScope 4000 Series of automotive scopes, as it requires hardware resources not available in earlier products.

3.  Training Courses

If you own, or are thinking of buying, a Pico Automotive Diagnostics Kit, you mustn’t miss our Engine Management Diagnostics course. This two-day course introduces the basic working principles of engine management systems, component testing and system diagnostics using oscilloscopes. The course is split between class-based theory sessions and practical demonstrations in a workshop using the Pico Automotive Diagnostics Kit, together with plenty of hands-on experience with our kit. The course runs several times a year around the UK, and we currently have the following dates available:

6.  Latest Software Releases

We have an exciting new release of PicoScope available for download. This combines the motorcycle version of PicoScope into the general automotive release so that everyone now has the best of both worlds. On top of this we have further preset tests added for measuring COP ignition systems using the COP probe, information on how to test FlexRay signals and several other improvements, with more to come soon!

As soon as we release new software, it is made available for FREE download from our website. To check which version you are using, start the software (PicoScope, PicoLog or EnviroMon) and select HELP | ABOUT.
